Hey all. Thinking about picking up a leather case for my 13PM.

I had one for my 11PM and loved it, but from what I’m seeing online ever since the 12, it’s been a massive downgrade.

How is everyone liking the new cases? Are they worth the money?

The fit is great as always with apple products, but if you want the leather to patina over time naturally like the 11 series cases and prior it will not do it. Will require some work either by sanding (which I did) or chemical treatment to get the leather into a state where it will do that.

Also, just be sure to consider the colors this year. Golden brown, which I assumed would be like saddle brown in previous years is more of an orange color.

All in all I am disappointed with the apple leather this year. I ended up ordering an Andar Aspen leather case which will be here later in the week. It looks like a really high quality case with good leather and traditional colors. It also has MagSafe. I’ll post some pics when I get it.

That one and the Bullstrap tempt me, but I really want a closed bottom case

I hear ya. My 11 PM leather case didn’t have one and it didn’t bother me so I’m not too worried. One thing I will say is that if you swipe down for reachability the bottom lip does impede that. Was much easier in my 11 PM apple case.

Don’t forget that the Apple cases (leather, silicone, and clear) are HIGHLY PROTECTIVE that most 3rd party cases simply cannot match. See thread below:

FYI, i love my Midnight leather case.

Another vote for the Apple midnight case. I had the Andar Aspen case as well, but returned it because (to my surprise) I liked the midnight case better.

Just picked up the black leather case today. The power button feels mushier than in the past, I prefer a crispy-clicky home button.

I’d like my Apple case quite a lot if they used traditionally tanned leathers like they used to.
These things are literally painted — while they look brand new for a couple months longer they also age terribly once they do start showing wear.

I don't think the Apple leather cases are worth it. There are more affordable options out there.
Bought the Dark Cherry one and while I love the colour, the case is protruding slightly in the lower left corner, almost like its bent. The protrusion makes the case wobble on tables, funnily enough not due to the camera bump.

I’d buy an Andar Aspen or Bullstrap for my 13 PM instead of the Apple leather case if I could do it again. Andar is full grain and Bullstrap is top grain leather.

I was hoping Golden Brown would patina but it’s a finish that’s identical to the iPhone 12 leather cases and only genuine leather.

I know this thread is quite old but could someone explain to me which is better? Full grain or top grain leather?

It really doesn’t matter, top grain just means it been “corrected” or sanded somewhat.
Some of the best leathers are corrected, like Horween Chromexcel is corrected.
Full grain just mean it’s the uncorrected top layer of the hide. Some say that’s “better” since no material has been removed but some say it doesn’t matter.
Depends of how heavily corrected it was really.

Thank you so much for the explanation!
