How big do you think the crowds will be at the Apple stores?

I ordered my iPad to have it shipped to me in the mail on Saturday, but am curious as to how many people will be showing up to be in line at Apple stores that day and will still be going just to see what the turnout is.

Will it be as big as the original iPhone launch? What do you think? :D
 
Too damned big for me. I opted for home delivery. Not going near an Apple store on April 3rd.
 
I read somewhere last week that the Apple stores were averaging 700 reservations per store. That's probably higher by now. I think there will be some big lines, but they'll move a lot faster than the iPhone lines did.

Agreed. iPhones took forever to complete the process and we had to stand in line much longer than needed, especially when the iTunes activation system got blocked up when the 3G came out. These things should be much quicker since there is no contract stuff to go through.

Hmmm...700 reservations being picked up between 8AM and 3PM. That's 7 hours and 100 transactions per hour. If you have 10 sales associates on the floor the whole time, that's 10 transactions/associate/hour or one every six minutes per associate. It will be a busy day with lines but it sounds possible. I'm sure some of the stores (Manhattan) will see higher than the average number of reservations but they'll be staffed accordingly. I still woudn't go near the store though. Uh Uh, no thanks.

makes me want to go ask my local Apple Store how many reservations their expecting, maybe I should opt for Home Delivery instead.

I have no way to guage my feeling on how it will be. I have to go because I just reserved my Ipad at the local store, I don't think I will be doing any midnight waiting in line stuff, I'll just show up at 9am and hope I can get out of there quickly.
 
I made a reservation at my local Apple store. I liked not having to spend the money ahead of time and I also liked having more time to make up my mind. I reserved the 16 gig model but I bet I could get to the head of the line and go for a bigger model as the small ones would likely sell out first. I don't relish the idea of spending more than a half hour or so dealing with crowds and lines so perhaps I will opt to let my reservation go unclaimed. So there you have it. I'll either head over there early to try and get one and get out quickly or I'll decide to wait a while and get one when it's more convenient for me. For me, the idea of ordering one and being stuck at the house waiting for a delivery is less attractive than the ability to swing by the Apple store and take a look at the line and make my decision on the spot.
 
I am sure it is going to be crazy at the 5th ave store, I will get up early and go and hope to be in the first 1000 or so. I am not planning on camping out to be one of the first ones there or anything though.
 
Just thinking about the line situation. Are there going to be 2 lines one for pre orders the other for walkins? Or are they not going to sell to walkins until 3?

And if it's a preorder it should be very fast. Because it will basicly just be a checkout line walk up get your ipad then leave. They don't seem like any accessories are going to be available so other then AppleCare there should be no other issues. Just my opinion

My store told me two lines. All genius bar appts. cancelled. Should be pretty fast in/out
 
I think that the crowds will be as big, as the iPhone launch, if not BIGGER. Waiting at the Apple Store is half the fun! Too bad I'll be missing the hoopla this year. I'm having mine shipped. On the plus side, Fed Ex usually delivers in my area early in the morning so it's possible that I just might have mine before the :apple: Stores even open ;)
 
If I luck out and FedEx comes early Saturday, which they probably won't because I don't have that kind of luck, I'm thinking of going down to the mall and checking out the crowds, maybe see if any accessories made it to the stores.

Hey, if Fed Ex does come early you can take your brand new iPad to the Apple Store with you . . . . then stand casually by while others are waiting in line to get one :p

I'm thinking that most should have their iPad by noon time. Fedex doesn't do alot of Saturday deliveries compared to the rest of the weeks. Besides that most drivers will want to get it done in the morning so they can have the afternoon off.
 
Another factor to consider is that all the people that bought iPhones at launch were only AT&T customers. The iPad is open to be purchased by anyone that wants it which brings a lot of different buyers
 
I'm guessing probably just alittle bit bigger then the lines at the First iPhone release.

I got there for the iPhone release around 2-3 hours before the store opened and I was like 45th in line and I still got the phone I wanted.
 
I mentioned this another thread a while back, but I was in my Apple store last week to buy a new iPhone, and I asked the Apple rep helping me how many people were coming into the store looking to buy an iPad right now. (Meaning, they've heard the buzz and want one but don't realize it's not out yet.)

He said "About every second person through the door."
 
Had to get my iPhone 3GS replaced the other day and while at the Genius bar I asked the employee how big he thought the lines would be on the 3rd in comparison to the 3GS launch he said definitely bigger. He didn't know if the store hours were going to change though I remember on last launch they opened half an hour early. I was there at 5am and was 10th in line @ Sherman Oaks Apple.
