Someone told me it's best to repair permissions after a major update. They said only achieve this through using Disk Utility on my OSX disk by booting into it, not inside OSX itself.

You can run disk utility from the application's folder, I think you mean from the install disc. Put in your install disk then restart your system. While it's on the white boot screen hold the apple and c buttons down. It should boot from the install disc. From there you can run disc utility from the install disc. Finish then restart like normal.
Are you sure it's Apple and C? It doesnt seem to work. I've tried holding it down from restart, holding it down from when I see the white boot screen and tapping it constantly. No dice!
I wouldn't repair permissions from the install disk - when you update your system, or add new applicatons, etc., permissions may be changed to properly reflect the additions made to your system. Repairing permissions from the install disk will revert your permissions back to how they first were when you installed the system, possibly screwing up any updates you've installed since.

What about repairing permissions from Disk Utility from within OSX? I'm relatively new at OS X, should I be doing things like this?
