How can I configure OS X Server on AEBS?

So the Apple Certified Technical Coordinator Peachpit guide tells us to configure the server before installing the server. They want us to use ethernet but MBPs don't even have ethernet so I need to do this via Airport WiFi.

Says to configure IPv4 to Manually and set a custom IP like 10.0.0.123 then in the DNS tab set the DNS server to the same 10.0.0.123 then delete whatever search domain is currently there and set the DNS Search Domains to pretendco.com etc. This is all for the training of course. So naturally since I'm using WiFi/Airport Express as soon as I change those settings boom I have no internet/network.

How can I simply set up OS X Server using my current Airport set up so I can have both my normal internet and this new server for training?

Should I be doing this in the Airport Utility? What IPs should I be using in the System Prefs WiFi Network TCIP and DNS tabs?

I feel if one is trying this at home investigate in using DHCP "reservation" IPs then setting up a manual IP!

OK I found it in the Airport Utility. I can add an IP in the range and add a port. How do I put OS X Server on that new IP and with a search domain called something like pretendco.com? And if I leave the port will it just use a default port?

Also another question. The Apple ACTC training tell us to create a new Local Admin / ladmin account and set up OS X Server on that account for this training. If I want to skip all that for simplicity can I just install it OS X Server on the normal user account I'm using now if I'm not worried about mixing Server with my current Login account?

Why would they want us to create a new separate Local Admin account? I'm assuming it's because they're thinking we are taking a course at an Apple Training facility and are just keeping everything separate from our normal user accounts on our MacBooks.


EDIT: So I was watching a video tutorial on Yosemite Server set up and the guy just installs it on his current account. The Server Host/Computer Name was obviously just his machine name from preferences so I guess there's no need for me to do everything that's in the Apple Training guide.

I mean all I want to do is learn how to use OS X Server so why make things more complicated right? I can always learn how to configure my Airport for a server later but that's not even in the training guide. Everything is ethernet.

Anyway if I do try to set it up I need to be using Airport Utility and System New Prefs. So I assign a new DHCP Reserved IP in the Airport Utility Network tab. Then do I use that IP in System Prefs -> Network Prefs -> WiFi -> TCIP -> DNS Servers? Should IPv4 be DHCP or Manually? Should I reserver by MAC or DHCP Client?

Actually, all seems ok with being able to following along in the Peachpit book now because I just went ahead and installed the server then in settings I changed the Host Name from server888.localhost to server888.vc.shawcable.net because my ISP/shawcable search domain was already there so it made things easy. So basically this means my server is reachable from the outside which is what the book/classroom wanted.

So basically I can go through the whole book just using my MBP which is nice.

If you are using the OS X server with Apple Airport the server will auto update the extreme when configuration OS X Server

If you want to see how this all works watch it on Todd Olthoff on YouTube for Yosemite Server. He speaks about using an Extreme as his router in his server setup.

It's funny because I found his videos last week. Fn amazing series. He does it with ALL server versions. He's the ONLY one on the entire net going through every feature of Server. It's basically the video version (and better) of all the PeachPit books. You can easily get your ACTC going through his videos without the books IMO. I downloaded all videos for Yosemite and El Capitan. Brilliant.

I have it all set up with my AEBS. I was confused between the System Network prefs and the AEBS prefs because as a noob you're confused by what you can actually change since you're dealing with ISP settings as well.

But all is good now and I'll probably just buy a $250 2009 MM as well.

Can a MM video out be connected to my rMBP via USB-C VGA Multipart Adapter ?

No, that works in the wrong direction. Once the mini is set up you can use Screen Sharing (Apple's VNC implementation) but I've never found a way to start from scratch that way. You will need a keyboard, mouse, and display to get it running to the point you can enable screen sharing and remote configuration.
