How Can I Convince My Dad to Buy Me a New iPod?

i have a 4G iPod 20 GB it was purchased in Febuary of last year. but it was stolen in may of the same year, i managed to buy another one (not mine) for $90 (from a friend) but i never told my dad. things went well for the past few months then in january my hard drive crapped out (yes i accidentaly slammed it against my desk). but the second iPod was out of warranty so i've been stuck without an ipod for five months. recently i've been trying to find a hard drive replacement since ive managed to open my iPod but no affordable luck.

but the new ipod deal is appealing to me, especially since i want a black iPod and a 20 gig holds most of my music but i would love to be able to watch tv on it too.

my birthday was two weeks ago and my dad agreed to buy me a macbook for my birthday and since the promo is going on i figured why not take advantage of the oppurtunity. i figured i can tell my dad my sister will pay for the iPod but im not sure how that will work since he has no idea about my iPods current status. im afraid to tell him too since i seem to have a habit of breaking/abusing or just forgetting about my gadgets.

any ideas on how to convince him?

also can i get a free printer as well as the ipod with the education discount? seems too good to be true.

Suck it up. Either use your own money (that means Get A Job, if you don't already have one) or do without. By your own admission, you have a problem taking care of your gear. That's not to slam you, since we all get careless sometimes. But if you know that, and you can't afford to lose your own money, why on earth should your poor Dad (or sister, or anyone) have to pay for it? Especially if you haven't had the basic courtesy to tell him the truth, that you lost it.

Losing/breaking your electronics, not telling your parents, and expecting free stuff are three different marks of immaturity. You're a kid, so it's normal for you to lack that maturity. Things like this happen so that you can gain that maturity.

Totally agree. An ipod is not a right- but a privelige.
 
I'm still trying to figure out how to get your dad to buy me one.

Once I figure that out, I will let you know what I did. ;)
 
well i slightly emellished, the only ive ever lost was my bluetooth headset and my ipod was the first thing ive broken.

but portent you are right, i've never though about it that way.

does anyone know where i can buy a new ipod hard drive? 20 or 30 gig they have the same dimmensions.
 
I know how it feels to be iPodless, my G2 iPod was broken during a locker inspection whilset I was attending Air Force training....... stupid Sergeant :mad:

Still it gives you a good excuse to just go buy a nice new one.... or steal one, run a credit card scam, the end justifies the means to get a new iPod :rolleyes:

Tell him it is basically FREE..dad's like that word.

Yes you can get both the free printer and iPod!
 
You're really just going to have to suck it up and buy a new one.

I really think that, because you're the one who broke it in the first place you should be the one to pay to replace it. It isn't your dads fault that you smacked it on your desk (I know accidents happen, but iPods are an expensive thing to ask for). If you really need to-get a job, that's how I saved up for my iPod.

If you're really desperate to get an iPod with the deal-I would say the iPod is for a friend of yours who wanted to use the deal since you didn't need a new iPod. Would that work-or would he notice? I'm assuming that since he hasn't realized you broke your iPod he probably won't realize if it's a newer model.

Honesty is always the best policy.

I think you're going to have to settle for a (free) iPod nano, thanks to the Education promotion.

Wow, am I the only one that looks at that above statement and shakes my head a little?
 
i agree with portent

as a parent, i would be royally peeved if i knew the truth or the real reasons (ie. you broke it...fess up). it's understandable with your thinking given your age and you admit that, which is good.

what i find troubling is the fact that you're scheming to get an ipod, yet
you are getting a macbook...for your birthday?

There is a common saying: Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

I would take the macbook and not say a word personally.

i had a modest upbringing and something like that macbook, would have been worth birthday, christmas and any holiday/event gifts for 2 or 3 years. :)

Honestly, my kids are way too young, but if they ever asked me for something on top of a nice gift like a macbook, i would probably tell them to really think about asking me again before i started to laugh. then, i would laugh hard and suddenly stop, go to my straight serious face and say,
"You ARE kidding right? :)
 
wait, you get a macbook for your birthday? from your parents, so you don't spend a single Dollar?

Then why did i have to cough up the 1416.87 € for my macbook + ram, that i saved over the course of one year, by working; yes I worked for that money.

48 hours a week.

just think about it.

I work 10 hours a week and I could make £800 in about 4 months with no overtime... But I usually make around £300 a month >_>

yeah it was a bad job, it was at the red cross. i had to do it instead of the army.

my options were:

-9 months army
-12 months civil service (hospital, red cross, etc.)


i chose the 12 month option, because i dislike guns and the army.

in theory 4 months would have given me the money i needed, but that would have been without spending money on other thiings you need.

the job i had before was paid well better, gave me around 600€/month with a 25 hour week.

Right now i´m jobless: I'm at university and am keeping my eyes open for a good offer :)
