Just when I was thinking I liked iOS 5, I open Safari on my iPad and see tabs. What a waste of space! And ugly. The old system was infinitely superior and more appealing. Is there any way to disable this new tab system and go back to the page-like system? This is almost worth reverting to iOS 4.

Hmm, I'l going to give iOS 5 some more time to see if the other features make it worth keeping.
Every time I look at Safari now, I feel like I'm looking at a noob user's IE who's got all those extra spammy toolbars installed taking up a quarter of his screen. A pro has a clean browser. iOS 5 made me a noob.
I know there was a long-standing bug (feature?) that Apple's highly-touted Javascript acceleration only worked inside Safari itself, not web apps or native apps using the Safari component. This ensured that Safari was always superior to third-party browser apps. Is this bug still around? Or can third-party browsers perform just as well as Safari now? I never had a reason to consider them before, but now there's a market for a better iOS browser.

Thanks, I'm from the future actually. Tabbed browsing doesn't literally mean the tab bar UI component. It's just a concept of having multiple pages open simultaneously in an easy to navigate manner. And Safari always had that. The page-like representation was a superior UI design; easier to use; allowed more screen real-estate; allowed a nice overview of open tabs. But thanks for knowing what you're talking about and lacking all aethestic and effciency appreciation.
The tabs take up very mininal space and how in the world are pages superior when it takes 2 clicks to switch as opposed to 1?
Apple needs to expand the touch space at the top of Safari that zips the page back to the top when touched.
Tabbed Safari makes that space so skinny I'm getting the address or Google box instead of jumping to top of page.

I was looking forward to this feature...but I don't have it? I'm on a 3GS if that matters. I still have the overlapped pages icon that when I touch it I can scroll left and right to the opened pages.

)That's the sole advantage, but i give up 30 pixels of real estate, it looks downright tacky, it's now inconsistent with other iOS devices, and I have to rely on overly long and poorly titled web page names rather than an instantly recognizable snapshot to identity the content in the tabs. And seeing 9 snapshots at once is far easier to mentally process and choose from than reading 9 text labels (human brains are wired for imagery - look it up). The tab bar doesn't even hide when I have a single tab open; totally amateur.
Apple took mobile surfing to the next phase of sleekness and usability with the paged approach to tabbed browsing; this change is a step backwards.

??? The old system was ridiculous! Every person I've ever let play on my iPad asked where the tabs were for other pages. Tabs are the norm. Tabs are simple. I wish they were on the iPhone.
It is. I'm glad I found out a while ago otherwise I would've been raging today.
I'll keep Mercury on the iPhone, but probably switch back to Safari on the iPad.

I agree with redscull - I'm a big fan of tabbed browsing, but showing literal "tabs" is a waste of vertical space. I'm a big fan of the OmniWeb browser on my Mac because it uses a vertical tab bar along the edge of the window, with little icons of each page. (Opera can do the same thing, and while it's great on Windows, it's still kind of a mess on the Mac.) It's annoying whenever I have to use anther browser which insists on showing a horizontal tab bar - and now Safari is doing that? Damn damn damn damn damn. I suppose it's more user friendly for n00bs, but I wish they would have given us the option to continue using the older method for managing tabs if we prefer it, which I certainly did (though having the ability to have more than nine tabs open would have been a nice addition as well).
Oh well. Maybe it's time to investigate some alternative browsers. Though it seemed to me that most such browser prominently advertised an always-visible horizontal tab bar as a selling point… Damn.

tab browsing on my iPhone would be the last thing I would want. Thankfuly it's for iPad only.

Oh come on - you know that they HAVE to complain about SOMETHING, no matter how incredibly ridiculous.
Yea I hate the tabs too!! I never use them on my Mac. I can't use them on my iPhone yet I'm forced to use them on my iPad. Regardless of your personal preference, you should have the option of remaining consistent across your iOS devices!!
