I think it ran -- it acted like it was going to happen ("Apply") but nothing on the screen to inform of a result and I don't know how to navigate to it. Any help appreciated!

Unfortunately Imy Imac (2013, 10.15.7) seems (after my backup attempt [and I hadn't check beforehand]) to lack the last 2 "nodes" in your specified navigation (MobileSync and, within that, Backup). Should I have created empty versions of them beforehand? In any case, any advice/info much appreciated. Thanks!

If backup worked, the backup process would have made the subfolders.

In Finder, when you plug in the iPhone and select it in the sidebar, click on the "Manage Backups..." button: see anything there.

And: what phone and version iOS is this? The Mac might need to have a "software update" to run to recognize/handle the phone.
