Right now I use VLC to play .avi files and my icon is a little orange cone. I'd like it to match my .mp4 files and show a picture of the video as my icon. Anyway to get this to happen or am I stuck with the orange cone?

Try installing Perian but I'm not sure you're going to get AVI thumbnails. Probably not.

try "get info" and click on the icon to make it active - you can then paste another icon - you can use delete to clear it

Yes, the icon itself can be changed this way. Thumbnails for AVI and MKV files probably won't work.

Mavericks and later use AVFoundation rather than QuickTime to make previews. There's a nice QuickLook Generator that does this.

Additionally, there's also a way to enable older video support with LegacyMovie.
Thanks for the link. It's exactly what I wanted. All my vids have thumbnails now with a picture of the video.
