All finder windows are set to icon view; it changes back to column when I want to upload a file. Chrome does not do this, either. This is Safari behavior.

Safari went back to showing icon view----now it's back to column view. HOW do I get this behavior to stop?

2020 MBP, latest Safari and Ventura. The iCloud folder is the only one that retains icon view. All the others open in column view. I change it to icon view, go back in, back to column. Every single folder on this MBP is set properly to icon view, with all set as defaults, etc

In Finder, press the keyboard shortcut combination: Command + J. You'll see the settings for Finder windows there.
The OP is not really in Finder, the screenshot is when choosing a file to upload to Google Drive from Safari. Command + J is not available.

Can you confirm that you are getting this behaviour when trying to upload to Google Drive or have I misinterpreted your screenshot? If my guess is wrong, can you explain all the steps you are taking.

My experience trying to replicate what I think you doing (upload to Google Drive):

In Safari at Google Drive, using right click and "File upload", I am always presented with a file chooser window in list view. It does not remember the view from last time. It does remember the chosen folder, so that the next upload is presented with the same folder as last time.

Don't confuse what is happening here with the views shown by the Finder app.

What I see in Google Drive upload is not the same as you (always list view for me), but equally annoying in that it doesn't remember what I used last time. There is probably more going on (or I have not correctly guessed what you are doing).

Chrome does not do this, either. This is Safari behavior.
Since the right-click menu is a special Google Drive menu (not a standard macOS right-click menu), I deduce that this is controlled by Google's javascript running in the browser even if the file choosing is using a standard macOS window. And that might well be different when running in Chrome rather than Safari.

It is Google's javascript code that is controlling the file upload process and that is the first place to look. My javascript skills (ha ha) are not up to that.

This happens no matter what website I use Safari to upload to. Facebook, Twitter, GDrive, anything. This behavior does not happen when using Firefox, Opera, or Chrome. I open up the Finder upload window, it defaults to column, despite the fact I have locked down every folder in Finder with icon view.

But this all does not happen if the source upload Finder folder is iCloud. If I try to upload from sources like Desktop, Documents, anything other than iCloud----column view. Every time. I change it to icon view...and it reverts to column view. Anything you see below on the left- column view every time---except iCloud. Apple advanced support guys have -no- idea. I sent them logs, everything. No reply for over a week now.

Have you resolved this and found a way to keep the "icon' view whenever you attempt an upload? I am just struggling with the same issue, love to hear the solution..!

They have no earthly idea. An Apple "Senior Advisor" typically has no clue about many things, I've found.
