Are there some commands that I could use on the terminal to install clamAV from the tarball without using MacPorts or HomeBrew? I want to install an antivirus solution but I distrust those offered through the App Store because of some of the horror stories that I read.

Honestly you don’t really need antivirus on MacOS. Use some common sense on the internet and you’ll be ok. Stay away from shady sites, don’t download random things or click on random links or email attachments. ClamAV isn’t great anyway.

Why would you want to? I do not use any AV. I do download and run the free version of Malwarebytes and scan about once a month just for peace of mind. It never has found anything.

Oh and RunsForFun also gave you some great advice in post #2.

There is a reason that ClamAV exists for Linux. Let's just leave aside why. I suspect there might be some virus on the iMac. Is it possible to take the tarball and use make and configure in some way that will make clamAV useable on the mac?

I wrote to the administrators of clamAV to tell them that Apple has a no fee developer account for nonprofits so I hope they'll investigate it. Meanwhile I want to know if I can install it myself without either of those two group's packages. There was a very interesting article about HomeBrew that showed that they could have been compromised if some honest security researcher hadn't disclosed that they published accidentally some security tokens . They fixed the situation but it shows why I prefer to go through Apple or do it myself.
