Is there a way to keep the aspect ratio for video?

I bought an ATV for the bedroom, but while watching all my videos expand to fill the entire screen chopping off sides of the video. Is there a way to keep this from happening?

Yeah, sounds like your TV is doing this. On all the movies I watch on my ATV that are larger than the widescreen ratio, I get letterboxing.
