Hi,

I am trying to move my account, data, and apps from my M1 Mini to a Studio. Once this is done and everything is running fine I plan on selling or giving away the Mini.

However using the Migration Assistant does not delete the account I initial logged into the Studio when it first booted. In fact, it seems all of the services are running under this account. And the Migration added the account from the Mini to Studio so how I have 2 accounts. I just want to end up with the one single account as I had on the Mini . How can I do this?

If I factory reset the Studio will it bring over the account from the mini when I then run the migration assistant? Or will it again create a second account?

If someone has the proper procedure, please let me know. Thanks!

Yes, you need to run the migration from the initial boot up out of the box to have your account transferred over without creating any new accounts on the new computer.

Since you already created an administrator account on the Studio, there are two options that could work for you:

1. Erase the Studio as you mentioned and start it up fresh and choose migration before creating an account on the studio.

2. If your account from the mini is already successfully migrated, you can use the Accounts pane of the new Studio account to make sure the migrated account from your Mini is an administrator. Then log out of the new account and log in to the migrated account that you want to keep and use the Accounts pane to remove the extra account that you don’t need.

There are two ways of migrating to a new computer:

1. Migration Assistant. Set up the new computer with the same user name as your old computer. This will have UUID 501 as the first account on the computer. When you run Migration Assistant on new computer with old computer attached it will detect that you are trying to migrate a user with the same name and ask if you want to replace it with the migrated in one. This will achieve what you want and have UUID 501.

2. Setup Assistant, only runs during first boot after an erase and install. It is recognisable as the familiar multilanguage welcome screen. Connect the old computer before or at the end of the erase/install. Do not create an account on the new computer. Setup Assistant will ask if you want to migrate in from another computer, or disk or TM etc. This will migrate in your user as UUID 501.

You can set up a second Admin account on your Studio. I would do that in general just as a safety measure in case of corruption of your main account.
Then run the Migration assistant from it. If you are transferring the user accounts from the same name it will give you the option to override and delete the existing account. If for an odd reason it does not do that, go back to your Admin account and delete the first users, then migrate.

Thanks for all the help. I got everything moved over to my Studio and environment looks just like the mini. So far things are working fine. The Studio is much faster than the Base M1 Mini with my development workload.
