hey guys. i know there have been similar posts before, but i want to be able to play blu-rays on my MBP and 27"imac. i don't want to rip the blu-ray to the hard drive, because that will take quite a while for each movie i want to watch. can anyone give me a simple solution?

Thanks! :)

Bootcamp or VM software of choice, Windows, an external Blu-ray drive and the software of your choice.

Other than that, afaik you're out of luck!

you cant, becuase there is no Blu-ray drive in Macs and are no applications in OS X that can play a copy protected Blu-ray movie. you could rip it however and watch the resulting mpeg4 video, but we probably cant discuss this here, and as you said yo udont want to do this.

you can however purchase an external Blu-ray drive and use Media Center in Windows.

how about a standard blu-ray player? connect the HDMI to mac's display port. i saw a display port to HDMI cable from capdase. dunno about audio though.

That won't work :)

The input only accepts display port format in. You'd need a convertor (see the threads about xbox/ps3 connection to the iMac 27")

Lol at the ppl who say u can't!!

Damn straight u can right off your macs hard drive!

The joys off the Internet ;-)

illegal bluray movies or legit bluray movies can be played on and from any computer. Old and new. I even play them on my iPhone :)

He is talking about inserting a Bluray disc into the iMac. Not illegally downloading Bluray movies and playing them via VLC or whatever.

Not the smartest thing to admit to on a public forum when its very easy to find out who someone is!

It's a bit clunky, but pretty straight forward to do Blu-ray playback from discs on Macs. You need an external Blu-ray drive (I have an enclosure with Firewire 400, but USB ought to work) that can burn to something, even if it's a DVD (e.g., BD-ROM/DVD-RW). Install Make MKV and VLC, then follow the instructions here. A plugin for Plex is in development that will simplify the process. But it works and provides a great Blu-ray experience once you start the movie. You need a moderately beefy Mac since it's handled by the cpu and not the gpu.

not always feasible because of data caps. the loss in quality is quite depressing too.

HA! nahh it will be right.

Course it will be right, i never said i have illegal blurays on my computer. i said people CAN download them or use their real copies.

Its legal for you to back up ur own stuff you buy ;) :)

i think thats a really bad rule. if i purchase a BD i should be bale to digitise it for archival/playback on my PS3 or convert to :apple:TV.

do you think the processor/GPU on my base 13" MBP would be able to handle blu-ray play back?

If you remove the HD audio and just rip with 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS, it will be find. Where you'll have problems is if you have to extract the DD or DTS cores from the HD audio on the fly (which is what Plex does) straight off the disc for playback.

would i only get 720p out of my MBP since its 1280x800?

720p on your laptop's display, 1080p to an external display/projector/TV if it has 1080p resolution.

i also found a really really freakin cheap external blu-ray drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...98&cm_re=blu-ray_drive-_-27-135-198-_-Product

That drive will not work with Make MKV because it does not have write ability. That may change with a future release of Make MKV, though.
