Whenever I wake up my 27" iMac from its sleep mode, it awakes with the spinning ball.

Below are my settings. This is FREAKING annoying!

sorry, here's the settings.
What is a pram reset?

What is a pram reset?
more info needed-
does the spinning ball go away on its own? how long after waking?

How long has this issue been going on? What sort of software updates have you done if any? Any hardware updates like memory?

How old is the iMac?

Do you have any docs program windows, or web pages open when you wake it up?

Do you put it to sleep manually or let it go to sleep by itself?

You might try deselecting "wake for network access", check put HD disk to sleep when possible, and for kicks perhaps change the sleep time different from monitor sleep just to see if your symptoms change at all. If not, you might click restore defaults (perhaps that is the defaults?)

This awake spinning issue has been happening since the very first time I put the machine on sleep mode, however, it does not happen all the time. It happens most when the machine has been sleeping for some time. It is roughly just over a year old since purchased however it was unopened believe or not for almost a year ( don't ask why, tired of telling the story). I opened it back in October. My machine is up to date and I rarely have programs running when in sleep mode. The sleep mode is done manually and automatically. I really can't tell you when the spinning happens ( after manually or automatically) since it doesn't happen all the time but most of the time.

I will try what you recommended.

Also make the machine Restart occasionally rather than just sleep all the time.

Cool, however, if I don't have to do this with my other iMac (20" 2008), why should I have to do this with the newer one?

have same issue on a 2010 i7 takes about 5-10 secs to go, not particularly bothered by it as it's still faster than shutting down and booting machine up, and also the benefits of saving a bit of energy when away from the computer.

My Mac Pro use to take 7 or 8 secs to wake up with the stock HDD. I put an SSD in over xmas and it wakes instantly now.

I think what your noticing is the time it takes for the hard-drive to spin up, you would have the beach ball until its up to speed

I've deselected the wake for network access last time and when I woke up this morning, the machine woke up instantly.

I plan in the future when I have more income to get SSD's on all my macs but. Right now they're expensive because of they're new technology and not many people are buying them.

I have this same problem. What I've noticed is that when I have my two external drives connected/mounted, when my iMac wakes up I get the spinning ball while it waits for those drives to spin up (not my internal drive). If I unmount the external drives my iMac wakes up right away - no spinning ball.

While it's not the end of the world to wait 5 or so seconds, I don't understand why the whole system has to wait when I'm not even calling on those drives at that point. I can see if the drives were in sleep mode and I opened one up, then sure, I have to wait for it to wake and spin up.

I believe the reason is that those hard drives are needing to mount as they are no longer mounted when the computer sleeps. Just like when I plug in my external into my MacBook Pro and it takes a few seconds for it to mount.

Great- hopefully it continues!

I have noticed that my Macs run better if I reboot them every week or three. If I forget I notice things slowing down, more spinning beach balls, etc. While I don't think this is your issue, I believe it is recommended to restart on occasion to keep it running smooth. I know for a fact my wife's MacBook gets glitchy if she doesn't reboot every two weeks.
