Whenever I wake up my 27" iMac from its sleep mode, it awakes with the spinning ball.
Below are my settings. This is FREAKING annoying!

What is a pram reset?
more info needed-
does the spinning ball go away on its own? how long after waking?
How long has this issue been going on? What sort of software updates have you done if any? Any hardware updates like memory?
How old is the iMac?
Do you have any docs program windows, or web pages open when you wake it up?
Do you put it to sleep manually or let it go to sleep by itself?
You might try deselecting "wake for network access", check put HD disk to sleep when possible, and for kicks perhaps change the sleep time different from monitor sleep just to see if your symptoms change at all. If not, you might click restore defaults (perhaps that is the defaults?)
Also make the machine Restart occasionally rather than just sleep all the time.
I have this same problem. What I've noticed is that when I have my two external drives connected/mounted, when my iMac wakes up I get the spinning ball while it waits for those drives to spin up (not my internal drive). If I unmount the external drives my iMac wakes up right away - no spinning ball.
While it's not the end of the world to wait 5 or so seconds, I don't understand why the whole system has to wait when I'm not even calling on those drives at that point. I can see if the drives were in sleep mode and I opened one up, then sure, I have to wait for it to wake and spin up.
Great- hopefully it continues!I've deselected the wake for network access last time and when I woke up this morning, the machine woke up instantly.
