I bought it at the Apple store on October 24th.
I heard that the new 3GS's cannot be jailbroken unless tethered to a computer on boot.
Is there any way to tell if this applies to mine?

Settings>general>about> check serial numer. You will see 3 number, then the 4th and 5th are the week number.

So,
111 _ _ 111111

Thanks,

I did that and the 4th and 5th numbers are 41.
So does that mean it's possible? Or not...?

Probably gonna be a tethered JB for that phone.

You have a MacBook, check it yourself.

1. Connect your 3GS to your Mac and put it into DFU mode.
2. On your Mac, click the Apple Logo in the upper left corner.
3. Click About this Mac - More info...
4. Click Hardware - USB - USB High Speed Bus - Apple Mobile Device (DFU mode)
5. Look for the iBoot version under the Serial Number.
6. If the iBoot version is 359.3.2 or higher, you have the new one that can't be JBed.

To get out of DFU mode, remove phone from cable, just hold down the power and home button until you see the Apple, let go, phone will restart.

perhaps I am the one who is misinformed here, but I'm pretty sure you are confusing jailbreaking with unlocking. You can jailbreak it no matter what version of iBoot you have. You can't easily unlock the newest one though, it requires the tethered unlock, which looks like a major PITA to me.

No, it's a tethered jailbreak.

Once the phone runs out of battery or needs a reboot due to a Cydia app install or a problem, the phone will not restart without being connected via the USB cable to a computer and having Blackra1n run on it again.

It is a jailbreak.

Here is a source perhaps some will trust more than me....

From the 5th paragraph:
Also, if you purchased an iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch (any capacity) in October or later, there is a high probability that you have a new model. Blackra1n currently performs only a tethered jailbreak for these new devices, which means you need to use blackra1n every time you boot the device, otherwise all your jailbreak data gets wiped.

First 5 numbers of your serial will tell you if you have the old or new Bootroom.

xxx37 or less means your iPhone is jailbreak friendly. Anything that goes xxx38 to xxx40 has a chance of having the new bootrom. Anything xxx41 and over has the new Bootrom.

BTW, xxx are first letters/numbers and those 2 digits are the week in which your iPhone was made.

So you need all of that in order to boot a jailbroken iphone that died?

Is anyone working on a way around this?

That's what I meant. But dang, that stinks (for people who want their new iPhone jailbroken).

Sell it and buy a gently used one about 2 months old. I just bought two of the nearly new 3GS phones in the last 2 weeks before the supply dries up.

Both are jailbroken, look like new ones and working at 100% (and have 10 months or warranty left)

What about 359.3?

My boot rom shows 359.3 but nothing after it.

Can it be jailbroken?

It is a pain having to plug the phone in the computer and tell it to turn on and off. I bought mine recently and it has the new Boot Rom which is a pain guess i'll just have to wait.
