im using leopard and yes, but i can put them elsewhere if needed, also how would i do this for my actual macbook itself
 
Well it's easy if you can move the files somewhere else, can't you just reformat and don't partition? I've never reformatted a partitioned drive, my suggestion is based on the guess that formatted removes the partition. Of course if you google "remove partition" or something you should get lots of advice.
 
In utilities.

Disk Utility.

Select your exernal HDD

Select the Partiton Tab

select 1 partition and click erase. Sorted.


Backup everything before hand, and move it back onto the drive when complete.
