How can safe is iCloud data?

I've been thinking.. And this has bothered me for a bit on MobileMe as well...

How safe is our data in the cloud? I mean, what if someone steals my iPad and decides to be a jerk and delete all my documents and contacts. Will they disappear from all my devices with no chance of recovery?

I think there should be some way to backup or some fail safe to prevent this.

With MobileMe, calendars and contacts are vulnerable with email being vulnerable too but easy to backup via copying the mail folder on the comp.

However, now that the cloud will also encompass iWork documents, I can see some problems coming if my device falls into the wrong hands. (I set pass codes, but I do allow 30 mins of use before I re-enter).

It's as safe as any other file you put on the internet or on a mobile device.

If your so concerned, lower your auto lock time. All of my iPhone data is backed up on my Mac any way, so I wouldn't be worried about it.

The achilles heal for cloud services is data integrity and safety. In the past apple has had problems restoring users email's. I was one such person, luckily before I had to fight with them, my emails suddenly appeared again. My point is, whether apple has a good enough back up strategy for your data.

Then there's data security measures to keep hackers from accessing the data. Given the problems with sony, its a valid concern about storing information on a server that you don't control. You have to trust the provider has put in place sufficient measures to keep your data safe.

I've not really been a fan of the cloud mentality just for these reasons. I'll have to wait until iCloud rolls out of beta and starts being available for the rest of us before passing judgement on it.

I would disagree. Integrity is usually not the biggest issue in cloud security to the average user- confidentiality and availability are much larger concerns ("safety" ?)

Yeah. I was surprised they built their data center. They have no experience running large datacenters and would have been better off outsourcing to Amazon or Google. But obviously they wouldn't do that...

I think I poorly worded my response. When I meant with integrity was integrity with the system to keep your data safe. Also backups in case of a problem with the data, hence my second mention about apple ensuring that they have a comprehensive backup strategy.

The data is not very safe in iCloud... ALL my iwork files have been spontaneously deleted and left no trace on my ipad, iphone, mac or icloud.com. Not once, but twice.

How were your local copies deleted by iCloud? That just doesn't happen.

Alas, it does happen. What has happened to me (twice) is that when I opened Numbers on the iphone, i saw the files, and they immediately disappeared, without any kind of warning. When I opened it up on the ipad, same thing. I went to icloud.com, and the files were not there anymore. And on the mac, the files should be on ˜/library/mobile documents/, but nothing. Some people say that on that folder, a subfolder called "deleted documents" should appear, but I don't have it.

The issue has been well documented, but no solution has been offered by apple.

As per me, it do not seems to be that much practical thought (or may be I never had such bad experiences) but simple solution of this is manual backup. No one is saying use iCloud to get backup of all important data it only says put data that you want to synchronize among the various Mac devices.
