I'm sure this happens to every new product cycle, but how does it work?

Right now you can order an iMac online from Apple and have it shipped in 2 weeks. Select the model you want, all the parts and upgrades etc.

If Apple releases a new model before yours ships - do they just cancel your order? Do they assume you want a machine with different parts and just ship one? What if the prices of the new iMac are different for a comparable size/model but not the same? Do they refund some of your money? Ask you to pay more if the new model is pricier?

Let's use the simplest example here: I order a 27" with 1TB and 32gb - Apple discontinues that before it ships and the closest is a 30" with 1TB and 32gb but costs $300 more.

How does that work when Apple releases a new product before they ship the old one?

I assume most would just cancel their order and get the newer model. Some probably don't even realize (believe it or not, not everyone follows this stuff) and Apple happily sells them the old model at full price.
