First, I'm haven't been to the apps store for a long time so I dont know whats there. 2nd, what do you call these kind of apps again? the one that can make phone call from your ipod touch to another phone?

now, what are your experiences with these apps? any recommendation? any good one, any that I should stay away from?

I think you're referring to the likes of Skype, Truphone, Fring (and a few others I can't remember but only because I've never used them). I use Skype daily to call overseas (& be called from overseas) and honestly wouldn't know any difference. Likewise Truephone. It all depends what you're after but generally voip calls are as good as regular (and in fact a lot of "regular" calls are routed voip anyway)

how much does Skype charge? Are there any free one?

If you make a Skype to Skype call, it's free. I don't think any app will give you free Voip call terminating in a landline/mobile. Best bet us to check out the various websites of the companies concerned.
