iPod How come when i delete playlist in itunes, then my songs dont work on my ipod?

new to ipods.
how come when i delte a playlist/folders on itunes or delete the songs from my computer,
and than i sync my ipod, the songs dont stay on my ipod?

do i have keep playlists/folders of my songs on itunes and my songs on the computer for them to stay on the ipod?

i had a differant mp3 player where i would put songs on it and delete it from my computer and they would stay on the mp3 player.

can i do this with my ipod?

You have to enable "manually manage music and ..." to be able to add and delete from iTunes or the iPod without synching them automatically.

This is the best way to understand it: Your music isn't really on your iPod, it is on your Macintosh. The iPod is just there so that you can temporarily take that music with you without having to carry your computer.

The iTunes Library on your computer is the real thing, that is what counts. Whatever is on your iPod doesn't count.

(If you don't like this, turn automatic sync'ing off. But you will live a more peaceful life if you accept how automatic syncing works.

Move the songs from your PC to your Macintosh. Say to yourself: There are no songs on my iPod. There are only songs on my PC, and I copy those songs from the PC to my Macintosh. Once that is done, the PC isn't your iPod's daddy anymore, but the Mac becomes the new daddy. Never, ever rely on songs being on the iPod. They are on your computer. So copy the songs from one computer to the other, and you'll be fine.

The best way to move your library from one computer to another: Use "Back up to disc" in the File/library menu to create a complete backup of your library. Works best if you have a DVD writer, you can fit about 4 GB onto a DVD and about 650 MB onto a CD. By doing this, you not only have a backup that you can stash away in a safe place in case your computer or hard drive breaks, you can also import that backup directly onto a new computer: Start iTunes on the new computer, insert the first backup disc, and iTunes will ask you whether you want to restore it.

BUT ALL OF MY SONGS ARE ON MY WINDOWS PC.
SO I CAN TAKE THE SONGS FROM MY IPOD AND PUT THEM ON ITUNES ON MY POWERBOOK?
THE REASON I DONT WANT TO KEEP ALL MY SONGS ON MY POWERBOOK AND WINDOWS PC BECAUSE IT TAKES MOST MY MY HARD DRIVE MEMORY.

THAT MEANS I CAN DELETE NONE OF MY SONGS BECAUSE THEN THEY WILL NOT GO ON MY IPOD?

Please don't use capital letters for every letter of every word.

It does make it hard to read and it seems like you're screaming.


Depending on the model of iPod you use, you can copy the music off it via a third party software like Senuti.

iTunes won't let you do that.


If automatic synch is enabled, thus the "manually manage music and videos" checkbox is unchecked, the iPod will synch with whatever computer you synch with.

For example, if you have three computers with different music libraries, and you synch the iPod with computer A, all existing music on the iPod will be erased and all the music on computer A will be copied to the iPod.
If you then synch with computer B, all the music on the iPod from computer A, that is also not existing on computer B, will be deleted and the music from computer B will be copied to the iPod.
If you synch with computer C, all the music from A and B, that don't exist on C, will be deleted, and all the music from C will be copied to the iPod.

I personally don't like that synching, as I haven't yet found it in anyway useful for me.
But others do, and you have to find out if it's for you.

Also, to use an iPod between Windows and Mac OS X, you have to format the iPod on a Windows computer (with FAT32), so that it then can be used also by the Mac.
