You could get it on Steam thru Crossover Games or if you're real ambitious you can use regular darwine. Lord knows why Steam won't release a client thru transgaming themselves...

AFAIK bootcamp is the only way. I've tried everything under CrossOver and had no joy.

If you've downloaded it all on Steam in Crossover and its not working for you, read on the left4dead page at winehq.org to see if you can fix it. Crossover is Wine and most of what's said there should be relevant. I don't have my Mac (shakes fist toward the genius bar) right now, I wish I did so I could help you more...

Keep an eye out for a Cider port of left4dead, I'm sure somebody out there in Germany or Norway is hard at work trying to get it to run perfect on the Mac right now.

I believe it was posted on Ars Technica some time ago...

I believe if that's the problem, Apple should pay them the money!! They have plenty of cash, it wouldn't hurt their bank account and they would have the best digital delivery platform for games (Steam)!

Agreed. I don't understand why Apple wouldn't want at least one killer app game to help sell units. If everyone and their mom had L4D on PC and Mac... it would only help them. Not to mention, a million is chump change to them.

Well if I win the lottery tonight, I'll call Valve personally. :)

Here's the article:

And interview with Gabe Newell here:

Effectively it's not a matter of Apple paying Valve to port a single game, it's mostly Apple giving a crap about games in general... working with developers to make sure OpenGL is functioning as it's supposed to... and essentially realizing adding games is more of a benefit to Apple than to Valve. Apple, for all it's foresight, is very short-sighted in terms of developing more advanced application of it's own platform.

And a mid-range tower you could swap out graphics cards after 3-4 years (so as to play some Crysis-esque monster game) would help too. The gap between an iMac and a Mac Pro is too wide.

My understanding is that Havok has been an issue for ages with Mac native gaming. At one time, they wanted a reported six figures to allow their physics software to be put on a native Mac game, but that's unverified.

Traditionally the Mac game market has been way to small to allow those kinds of expenses. I wonder how it is now that Mac market share has risen significantly?

That is why we should all be shouting Blizzard's praises. :D
