iPod How did she do that?

A friend of mine (who's unavailable at the moment so I can't ask) was in my car recently and she received a iMessage on her iPod touch. It didn't occur to me until u got home that the iPod touch doesn't have cellular connectivity. So was it tethered to her phone? Did she have a special case? How did she get an iMessage outside of wifi? :confused:
 
My only thought is she must of been connected to some Wi-Fi network to receive the message.

You drove past a network that was open and the ipod connected to it. No great mystery. The next time you are in a car (not as the driver, of course), check out your iphone or whatever as you drive past places with wifi. It will connect. In fact, its a pain in the ass sometimes. I'll drive home while listening to a comedian on netflix a lot and the phone will switch to the cablevision free wifi every now and then. But the signal is weak and my netflix will freeze until I drive out of the wifi range and back to LTE. The new iphone chips is supposed to prevent this from happening but it doesnt for some reason.

This was very helpful. I don't keep the wifi on my ipod on unless I'm home so I didn't know that could happen. Thanks.
 
It's actually quite amazing if your driving through a main thorough fare. I think the most I've ever see was about 6-7 wifi spots while sitting at a stop light.

Oh and of course if your friend happen to be in a Tesla Model S, they have built-in cellular reception that provides internet access :)
