How did you package/sell/ship your old Mac Pro?

With my nMP on the truck for delivery, I am now facing the ugly task of selling my old mid 2010 Mac Pro (12 cpu/48 GB, SSD). The local craigslist will be the easiest (maybe they'll pickup), but my latest experiences there have not been good. Best price would likely be e-bay. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to go?


E-bay would require shipping. As I had no room I had to discard the box. Are there packaging/shipping places that could make sure that is arrives safely for the buyer?

I'd check out your local UPS or FED-EX store front.

You can inquire with UPS or FEDEX if they have custom boxes that can fit your Mac Pro. Just be careful to ensure the computer is well packed and protected. Some prospective buyers are picky on how the item will be packaged. I try not to dispose of the original box in case I need to sell the machine. Also best to have nice photos of your machine that's clear that may increase your chances of selling the product. Good luck.

Considering all the fees that both Ebay and PayPal will nick from you, the higher selling price on Ebay might not be so high in the end.

If you can get original manufacturer's packaging, that would be great. I'd call local Apple Stores and authorized repair centers to see if any might be discarding Mac Pro packaging.

Also, people here have told stories about how they had their MP packed and shipped by The UPS Store, and then damaged in transit by UPS. UPS insurance wouldn't pay up because it wasn't packed by them (The UPS Store is a different company). The UPS Store wouldn't pay up because they packed it professionally and the insurance is by UPS, not them. This nonsense can be avoided by taking it to an actual UPS company location, such as one of their service centers, and having them pack it there. They do provide that service.

Note, though, if you get shipping insurance (you should), you also need to let the store pack the item (and pay their nicely marked up packing costs). If not and the item is damaged in shipping, UPS/FedEx will deny the claim due to improper (meaning not by their store) packaging - at least in my experience.

Have had mixed experiences with CL. Sold one a few years back, and everything was smooth...more recently, got a lot of BS offers, buyers who would flake out, etc. I think far and away the cheapest way to ship is USPS Parcel...cost me less than $60.

Saved the original box from 2006, and just slapped a UPS label on it. No issues. — Same with a 23-inch Cinema Display.
