how do I access the iBookstore

I was hoping to do this also to see what books are available. It seems that the only way to access to iBookstore is straight off the iPad through the iBooks App (which you will be able to see in the App Store through iTunes on your Mac)
So you will need an iPad even if just to browse.
iBooks is not currently available on iPhone, however Steve has announced that it will be available when iPhone OS 4.0 is released later this year.

Do you know offhand if the books are "reasonably" priced.. or should I say "competitively" priced???

Kinda funny. I can read books via a Kindle app on my iPhone, but not iBooks.

I have read 5 iBooks since I got my iPad, but I have to say that browsing at the store is pretty sad.
Generally, I go to the Kindle store and find the book that I want and then search for it on iBooks.
You have to go to either iTunes on your Mac and get the iBooks App then sync it to the iPad
OR
download the iBooks Apps straight to the iPad via the App Store directly on the iPad
Once you have the iBooks App on the iPad you can browse the iBookstore. You cannot access the iBookstore from outside the iBooks App
This MAY change when iBooks is available for iPhone also later this year.
I don't have an iPad (yet) as am in the UK, but from what I've read online the prices are comparable in both Apps (Kindle & iBooks). Some are more expensive in Kindle, some are more expensive in iBooks, and some are the same in both.
I think it's a copyright thing with the publisher's. Kindle already has the agreements in place to sell digital books using Kindle software / hardware in various countries around the world. Until the iPad launches outside of the US, Apple will only sell it's eBooks in the US whether it has rights to sell them outside the US or not. Why would Apple sell books in a country where they don't currently sell any hardware to view them?
You will have to wait for iPhone OS 4.0. Until then the iBooks is iPad exclusive. You aren't missing much. Really.
