Download or grab the Apple Back Up utility, it is in your iDisk Back Up folder. Then use it to select the files and schedule for your back ups. From there it runs automatically and does not need to be open to kick off at the scheduled time.

Agreed with marc11, iBackup works well for me too.

If you are more interested in mirroring certain folders from your Home directory to iDisk you can also use Transmit by Panic.

First......Ok, I have set up a back up plan for the "home folder". When I tried to backup it said I have run out of space. The part I don't understand is I hardly have any music and only about 8GB of photos. So why is it saying, not enough space? I have adjusted my settings so I should have at least 15 GB of storage space in my idisk.

Second.......If just photos are scheduled to be backed up in my Home folder, then is is redundant to also have them backed up in a separate back plan for iLife?

The bottom line is I am trying to save only my most important stuff and it still says I am running out of space when I attempt a backup.

Ok, did that. Now I am trying to run my backup plans and it is saying i don't have enough space. I have already increased my iDisk storage capacity to 17 GB and it is still saying not enough room. :(

Are you still in the 60 day trial? If so, BackUp will only move 100mb of data during the trial period. After that it will move up to your max available.

Nope not in the trial period, so I should have the normal amount of storage space.

Now I am making a little bit of progress and I have enough space for what I would like to save......BUT.....the apple backup program keeps saving on a loop, without actually saving anything. About every half hour, it starts all over again. I don't understand why that is. Any ideas as to what I can do to complete a successful backup?

I think it is working as designed and you are jumping the gun by stopping it. The backup program breaks up the uploads in segments and what you are seeing it the completion of one segment in those half hour loops you mentioned. I can't remember the size, but I think it is 80-90 MB per segment.

See about 2/3 down this page for info.

Just leave it run.

Let me ask you this then......I called apple care and explained to them that I had some 26 GB that I wanted to save onto idisk. AppleCare explained iDisk is not meant to be used for backup, but rather iDisk is used to share data among multiple devices. iDisk is not good at backing up large amounts of data. AppleCare suggests that a external hard drive be used in conjunction with time machine. What is your opinion on backing up?

Apple does say iDisk is not intended for a full backup, but they always seem to get fuzzy identifying any actual cap on what you can backup. I have seen forum posts from people who back up gigs and others who say it does not work.

Yes, the reason why Apple is fuzzy on the backup question, is that iDisk is not really robust enough to handle large backups. I did check at the Apple store and there are a few external iomega hard drives that were highly recommended. I like the external hard drive backup option, because I can pair it with Time Machine.

External Hard Drive - Thumbs Up

I am assuming that your "this" reply means that you agree that the external hard drive option you prefer as well. Much simpler to have a full back up of everything instead of constantly having to pick and choose what to save and what not to save.

Here is what I do. I use iDisk with the free Backup iDisk app to backup critical files/data then Time Machine on a Time Capsule to backup the entire drive. This does not backup photos or music, but pretty much all my other data is up there.

Here is my Backup config.

Ok, thanks. I made my backup selections look like yours. The only one I did not do was "DVDpedia" because it was not available as an option to select for backup. What is "DVDpedia"? Do I need to find that one and back it up?

Opps.....forgot one more question.....where are my backup files?

I just ran my mobile me backup, so I was expecting to find my backup files on the iDisk. But when I looked I could not find them anywhere. Any suggestions as to where those backed up files are hiding?

DVDPedia is a DVD/Blu-Ray inventory app I purchased. Often aftermarket apps setup their own preconfigured backup plans in Backup.

You backups are in the Backup folder on your iDisk. Look in the folder I selected in this cap.

I wish you could make the folders sync, your Documents match the iDisk Documents and ect.

I am not really sure what you mean, but it will be interesting to see if the new operating system, Lion will address your concern. MobileMe is also due for some upcoming improvements.
