how do i change the fan speed on my alu imac?

hey guys, ive done some searches, and cant for the life of me figure out how to change the fan speed on my baby. I dont care about noise, but the top of my machine is very hot, closish to too hot to touch... so if someone could point me in the right direction to increasing my fan speeds, thatd be great!!!!

I'd hesitate before messing around with the default fan speeds.

I'm sure Apple's designers and engineers are competent enough to know to keep the internals of your computer from overheating :)
 
Top left corner, extending down to the black panel behind and down the left hand side of the aluminium. The bigger the load, the more to the right it extends :)

It's just one great big heatsink - great design!
 
well yeah its pretty hot the whole way along the top, i just dled istat, so ill tell you guys the sort of heats im getting before going in brazen with fan changing intents

Yeah, only part that gets hot on mine and I would think all others is top left corner.

I think the whole premise of your quest is kind of wrong though.

Unlike budget PC's, Apple computers have extremely high QA and are extensively tuned so that both hardware and software work optimally together. The top of an iMac gets hot, but that doesn't mean it's a problem necessarily. Unless you are fond of putting your soft plastic troll figurine on that exact spot on top of your iMac, the "solution" to this problem is merely to understand that the top of your computer gets a bit hot when you use it. ;)

The idea that any individual user, however talented, is going to "re-tune" his Mac so that it runs slightly better in some way has generally turned out over the years to be a kind of vain hope. This goes for over-clocking, fan adjusting, etc.

What ive noticed with my ALU iMac.
When you switch the plug on and straight after, hold the power button for about 5 seconds, then let go, and press it again to power it up.. The fans come on full speed. Worried me at first as i thought id broken it lol. But it turned out to be a useful trick.

smcFancontrol 2.x will work on the iMac. A tiny increase in fan speeds has kept my temps in the low 40s else it would be 60+.
