How do I connect a Mac mini to a monitor with dvi input only?

I have a Dell Ultrasharp screen but it does not have an HDMI input, only DVI & VGA.

Can I just use a general DVI to HDMI adapter or is there a difference with DVI- HDMI and HDMI-DVI?

Just making sure you're not trying to connect a 27" Dell. That will work fine with the supplied adaptor. I've the same monitor (2412) connected to a Mini.

The HDMI port in the Mini can only handle up to 1920x1200 resolution, so it's perfectly fine for the 2412M. The 27" Dell has a native resolution of 2560x1440. If you were to connect it via the HDMI port on the Mini, the monitor would be using 1920x1200. A monitor not running at its native resolution does not look good and 1920x1200 on a 27" does not look good.
