I have an iMac 5k and I need to connect an external NEC monitor to it. The NEC has HDMI, VGA, USB 3.0, USB 2.0 inputs. I assumed I could use Mini-Display to HDMI cable, but in researching I saw some people saying it has to be Thunderbolt with the newer iMacs. I'm confused!

The thunderbolt and mini display port are the same connection on the iMac. Get a mini display port to HDMI and that will work
