you can create a network and have your mac mini to join the network (or vice versa) and share the files/folders you would like to transfer.

alternatively you can connect your ethernet cable directly between the mac mini and macbook. I'm not sure if the latter works though.

Seeing as though you're going from interface to interface, you may need a crossover cable unless the Mac interfaces "auto-negotiate" straight through vs. crossover.
