Hi All,

A while ago I was hunting for the AMAZON app on the MBA. It exists on the Ipad and iPhone, but not on the Macs for some reason.
By mistake I downloaded a "Amazon for Artist" app. I deleted it from my HDD via Finder.

However, This "Amazon for Artist" app keeps coming up in the Mac App Store now, as a "update" option. Its a pain as I now cannot just hit the "Update all" button each time to update outstanding app I do use.

How do I get rid of it in the Mac App Store under Big Sur?

I've done a google search and the below does NOT work. (Shot in the dark, as the below is from 2017!)
https://www.imore.com/how-delete-apps-your-mac

How to delete apps downloaded from the Mac App Store
  1. Open Launchpad on your Mac. ...
  2. Find the app downloaded from the Mac App Store that you want to remove.
  3. Click and hold on the app's icon until it enters jiggly mode.
  4. Click the 'X' that appears in the upper left corner of the app icon.
  5. Click Delete when prompted.

Hope you can advise

Best Wishes
Martin

I highly suggest installing a free app called "Appcleaner."

Install the Amazon app again from the App Store. Once it is installed, open AppCleaner and click on the hamburger icon in the right cover on the menu box. That will list all the apps on your Mac in alphabetical order. Tap on the Amazon app. You will then see all the files associated with the app. Make sure every file and folder is ticked for removal and then click on delete. That will completely remove the app from your Mac.

Once the app is deleted, follow the instructions below to hide the app from your current purchase list. That way you won't have to ever see it again or accidentally install it etc.

Download EasyFind(or FindAnyFile whatever pleases you)
search for the said app. Any trace of it will show up. Delete the files.

becareful make sure the files you delete are related to the app you want to get rid of. These apps search every single item on your drive, do not delete a system file or an unrelated file, something WILL break.

Thanks Guys! :)

That "Find Any File" apps looks awesome. Running since 2005, solid looking piece of work.

hhhmmm... good point about checking before deleting all files returned.... Great advice for a Mac Newbie, thanks :)

It will probably be next weekend now when I have time to properly give it a go

Although Big Sur has done a lot to make MacOS more similar to iOS, all things are still not equal. There’s no Amazon app for MacOS because the user experience with a full feature browser on a big screen is far superior to the experience on a mobile device. A mobile app is one way developers try make as many features of a website available to mobile devices with their limited screen real estate. Still, there are things you can only do on a computer with a full feature browser. Why spend the time and money reinventing the wheel. You already have the app built into Safari (or Chrome, or Firefox). Just type in Amazon.com.

And yes, be very, VERY careful deleting things from the system folder.

It's just so wonderful how people invent random processes to do things. So... so... *Linuxy*!

Reinstall the app. Open Launchpad. Long-press on the MAS application you want to uninstall. Answer the dialog that appears. App is removed.

I thought this is what the OP said he did and it didn't work?

I think the “Reinstall the app” is key here. The OP states the uninstall process didn’t work but he didn’t state how or why it failed.

He also states, “I deleted it from my HDD via Finder.” So did he just drag the application icon to the trash? Leaving all the supporting files in place? Does he have enough pieces of the app scattered around his system folder to trigger the updates?

Reinstalling the app, putting everything back together, may allow the uninstall to work properly.

When you delete an app in MacOS it does not delete related and supporting files and hence why we have apps like AppCleaner. If things changed lately I don't know.

You don't think the BOM from the MAS details exactly what it installed?

Hi Guys,

Sorry, no time to look into this properly until the weekend.

Backup > install > delete > check — careful time needed to be set aside for this.

Thanks for all the advise though, much appreciated :)

Hi Pos,

Um, do remember you are speaking to a newbie here! :) your help is appreciated though.

What are:
MAS?
BOM?

I've google searched the above and still no idea :)

Help appreciated at this point :)

OK, What done:
Backed up MBA
Installed app again.
Opened Launchpad.
Long-pressed on the Amazon app....

Where Now:
But no dialogue box has come up. Just the Cross at the top left, like with IOS to uninstall apps off the phone.

What do I do now? Try just clicking the Cross? Would that get rid off all the associated files etc, so I don't get it come up as an item to update in the App Store in future?

Hope you can advise on this method of app removal, without the need for installing apps to do it

Best wishes
Martin

Hi All,

Ah, I may have something:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202235

Also, I haven't emptied the trash can yet.
I'll see if this works... until the next time there is an update for "Amazon for Artists"

The option I'm trying now is via Launchpad.

Use Launchpad to delete an app

Launchpad offers a convenient way to delete apps that were downloaded from the App Store.
  1. To open Launchpad, click it in the Dock or open it from your Applications folder. You can also pinch closed with your thumb and three fingers on your trackpad.
  2. If you can't see the app in Launchpad, type its name in the search field at the top of the screen. Or swipe right or left with two fingers on your trackpad to show the next or previous page.
  3. Press and hold the Option (⌥) key, or click and hold any app until the apps jiggle.
  4. Click
    the X button
next to the app that you want to delete, then click Delete to confirm. The app will be deleted immediately. Apps that don't show
    an X button
either didn't come from the App Store or are required by your Mac. To delete an app that didn't come from the App Store, use the Finder instead.
