Hello, i am a new mac user and want to ask a few uqestions

1. How do i make Macintosh HD appear on the Left instead of right?
2. How do i put icons on the desktop? They just vanish in a puff of smoke whenever i drag them out from the dock.
3. How can i make it so that whenever i press "Finder" the Application tab appears first instead of the users documents?
4. How do i delete garageband, and other stuff etc... Approx how much space will i save?

Hi.

1. Click and drag Macintosh HD to the right side, not sure if it will stay there after a restart (Anyone?). Someone else might be better for that question.

2. When your dragging them from the dock, that is just taking them out of the dock. You going to want to go to Finder > Applications > then click/drag whatever app to the desktop.

3. I don't think you can do this in system prefs. You might be able to in a program called Onyx (google it).

4. Once again, go to Finder > Applications > and click/drag the applications (garageband) to the trash icon on the right side of the dock. You will probably have to do a spotlight (Blue Button, Top Right Of Screen) search to remove any remaining "garageband" files that are in the System Library. When you search GarageBand in Spotlight, hit the first button. Show All. Then, click and drag all of the GarageBand files to the trash. Might be a little dangerous if you aren't familiar with Mac incase you delete vital files, but thats the only way I know of.

Go to the Finder preferences, General tab
Change the "New Finder window opens:" drop-down list to "applications"

Really, the OP wasn't just referring to GarageBand. It is a good idea to take out the apps you don't use. Just look how much space GarageBand takes up.

100 MB?!? Thats nothing, especially considering that the macbook comes with 60 GB.

For the 2nd time, the OP wants to delete all of the unused software. GarageBand is *one* of those. Uninstall the other languages too and you've saved yourself a good chunk of space. Besides, 100Mb is a decent size for an app.

Hello thanks for clarifying them up. As a new mac user i thought that the ilife programs take up quite a lot of space. Considering garageband takes up only 100mb i wont delete it.

Are there any heavy bundled software that came with my macbook that takes up quite a bit of space?

Open Finder. Hit Command (the apple key) + comma. Where it says "new finder window opens", click 'Other' and locate the Applications folder. Now new finder windows will open with the Applications folder first.

The application in itself is nothing, this is where you can actually save some space (if you don't use Garageband and/or iDVD):



Another place to save space is by dumping unneeded Printer drivers:



And yet another way is to get rid of unwanted languages by using something like Monolingual or Delocalizer. (Note: If you have an Intel Mac, do not get tempted to use Monolingual's option to get rid of all PPC code, that has caused problems!)

go to Finder >> View >> Show view options, make sure the √ boxes for "snap to grid" & "keep arranged by" are UN-checked. Then trash your finder preferences and restart.

Now you can keep your icons wherever you want. The right side is the default position.

If you have not set up the computer already i would just do a fresh install. from there you can choose what to include and what not to. I usually do this with al my computers so that i can choose the apps. to include, languages, printer drivers, and all that kinda stuff.

I don't usually get rid of to many of the apps, never know when they might come in handy. But languages and printer drivers, along with GarageBand loops i usually get rid of.

As for hte question i think everyone else has answered them for you.

Hold down command and option while dragging an icon from the Dock to your desktop to create an alias (same thing as a shortcut in Windows) on your Desktop. You can also command-option-drag between/from Finder windows to make an alias.

Drag the application to the trash, then find the extra stuff, most importantly the included loops and drag those to the trash too. For future reference, uninstalling apps on a Mac generally just requires dragging the app to the trash. Most apps will leave behind a single tiny, harmless preferences file but you don't really need to worry about it. A few applications like GarageBand and iDVD have additional content (often big) for support, and you'll also have to drag that to the trash.
