Hi.

I would like to update my xcode tools to 4.2.1 so I can do IOS 5 development. "Is there a direct link to get these tools"?
Are they only available through the app store? My IOS developer account was setup by the company I am doing work for with their credit card info which I'm sure they don't want to hand out. I don't have a credit card number and it doesn't seem you can get free apps or updates from the app store without suppling a credit card. Is there another way to get this update? one that doesn't require a credit card?

are you sure about that? i'm pretty sure you can create an account without a credit card (just like you can if you try to create one on the iphone).

I'm pretty sure. I go to http:/developer.apple.com/tools

There is a link there "Download xcode"

I click that.

Then there is a link to Xcode 4.2.1 for Lion on the Mac App Store

I click that

Then there is button "View in Mac app store"

I click that

There is button at the top called Update

I click that

In the updates it shows an update called "Xcode Apple Version 4.2.1

I click update

This brings up the Sign in window.

I log in using the apple id used for my IOS developer account.

I get a message box that says "This Apple ID has not yet been used with the ITunes Store" with two buttons, "Cancel" and Review

I click review

I get the windows that says "Welcom to the App Store" with a continue button.

I click "Continue"

The next windows says to agree to the terms.

I click the checkbox to agree to the terms and then click agree

I then get the Review Payment Information windows which I can't get past without entering in the credit card info that was set up.

If I click continue it gives me an error "The sercurity code must be a 3 digit number" I don't what the number is because I didn't set it up.

Do I need this to get the update?

you don't need to go anywhere near the developer portal to get xcode any more.

do you already have an itunes store account? (used for iphone apps or itunes music etc) ? if you do then simply use that account to download xcode direct form the mac app store.

You don't appear to actually be reading this guys posts I'll jump in.

I don't believe there is a way to do it without a card. If I were you I would just grab one of those pre-loaded cards from any store that sells them and just use that for your account. You don't need to get it for too much money and then you can still spend that either in iTunes or use the card somewhere else.

I don't have an Itunes account. That's the problem. It seems you need a credit card to get one. Is this true?

who's account did you use to download xcode originally?
if it wasn't yours then you will need to speak to the account owner.

so you used someone elses itunes account then.
you will need to speak to the owner of the itunes account.

OR

completely remove xcode, create your own itunes store account, and then download xcode from the mac app store.

I have permission. I just went and got somebody at my work that has one.
They are letting me use it to get this file.

Now the issue is finding it on itunes. How do I find it? I tried searching for xcode 4.2.1 and it doesn't come up. Do you know where its located?

Can I get to the Mac app store through itunes? Isn't that where the button App store takes you? Sorry I'm not familar with it.

I don't seem to be able to use the same password that I used to log into itunes as when I click the app store Icon in the doc on my mac. Is this different?

is there anyway you could log in and send me the file? i would be ever so appreciative.

no, the mac app store is a separate application and is available on snow leopard and lion.

applications are DRM protected to itunes store accounts, so even if i wanted to (which i don't), it wouldn't work unless you had access to my itunes store account.

As near as I can tell there is no way to get the new xcode without having an account at the "App Store". As others have noted, an account on the iTunes store is not the same as an account on the App Store - though they can share the same apple ID and billing information.

I think there are ways to create an iTunes account without a credit card. Google it to find out. But as far as I know you need a credit card to create an App Store account. What I did is enter a credit card, to set up the account, then deleted the credit card information. There maybe a way to create the account without a credit card, but I don't know.

To be honest I'm not a fan of the App Store way of distributing software. I suppose it can be convenient for some. But basically if you buy a new Mac today, you will have to create an App Store account if you want to be able to update the software that came on your system.

You'd think that somebody clever enough to write IOS code would be clever enough to get onto the App Store, but perhaps not. I'll keep that in mind if I ever want to buy something from accelerated-systems.

OP, if you start at http:/developer.apple.com/tools
and follow the links from there to the App Store (like you have before) you should be able to login using the information provided to you by your coworker and download xcode for free.

DonRobb,

I know what you mean. Had the same problem back then. Here's what you can do:

Signing-up an account to the App Store and iTunes will really require you a credit card number. I suggest you only sign-up for an Apple ID then use that ID to register for a Developer account at Apple Developer portal. Register a free account at http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/ and click the "Get Started" button

Once you are logged in with your new account, you can get what you're looking for here: http://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action

Hope this helps. :apple:

Peace.
