Does anyone know how I can find the hardware serial number of my external USB-C SSD under Big Sur? Is there a Terminal command or something?

There is a serial number printed on the drive, but it's crazy teeny tiny writing and half rubbed off so I can't read it.

Which SSD are you using? Doing a google search there are a lot of articles about how to find an SSD serial number.

SanDisk Portable Extreme 500GB.

I've got a number that is reported by MacOS. The problem is that it doesn't seem to be the right one. When I try to register it on the manufacturer's website it reports back an invalid serial. I can see enough of the serial number printed on the drive to know that the MacOS reported one is the wrong format.

I suspect that you're getting the number of the actual SSD inside the portable case, which may not necessarily be the same as the case itself. If that's what's happening then you might be out of luck :(
