The story is I'm planning on buying a replacement SSD for my current SSD. So I need to format my current SSD to a completely blank drive to be able to sell it. The problem is that I don't have a SuperDrive, and Remote Disk Utility is somehow acting strange; I hold the option key and select Mac OS X Install (Remote DVD) but the machine boots onto my existing OS X on the internal drive. So there's a problem somewhere with the Remote install, and that makes me unable to format the drive. I've tried 'Startup Disk' in Preference Pane already and came to the same result.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a 8GB flash drive? If so copy SL to that (or Leopard) and use it. I've found that to be a much better alternative to the remote install.
