using iTunes or emailing it to myself (thereby defeating the purpose).

I already have documents sync enabled in the icloud service on the iphone and Pages is enabled to use iCloud


edit:

On my Air now and I see in the iCloud service that the files are indeed there so perhaps a better question: how do I get my synced icloud docs into MacAir Pages?

Don't you log in via iCloud.com and it'll come up on there? I don't have pages on my mac but it seems to be downloadable via iCloud.com and then I can open it locally.
 
There is no automatic way to do yet, that is coming with ML.

Currently, the only way to sync them is manually by going to icloud.com, log in, select the iWork icon, then select the document(s) you want to download to your computer. You then can upload them from you computer back to icloud.com.
