How do I get Att to cancel my iphone data plan?

I recently got a used first generation iphone and my intention was to use wifi only. I have wifi at home and at my school so its useless to me. Plus, edge is insanely slow. I asked on the phone is I could cancel it and they said no and the iphone requires data to function, (which isn't true) Does anyone have a first generation iphone without the data plan? How do I get rid of it? I don't want to jailbreak and unlock it. That will be my last resort.

Do you have a spare phone around you? What you can do is put the SIM card thats on the iPhone on the spare phone (it can be a RAZR, whatever). Call ATT and tell them that you sold your iPhone or gave it to another family member and now you have a RAZR (or whatever spare phone you have). Tell them to take out the Data Plan and to block access to it. Once its done, take the SIM card from the spare phone and put it back to the iPhone. Try hitting safari, if everything went fine it should say that the server didnt respond...Now enable WiFi and enjoy!

Thanks for the reply. That appears to have worked for now. I gave them the IMEI of my old phone. I don't get the Edge logo on screen and I can't connect to the internet without wifi. Can they tell if I'm using an iphone though and switch it back again though?
