How do I get iPhoto and iMovie back?

Hi All -

I was near the end of getting my Tiger install set up with all of my software, and I installed a demo to jFuse to try it out. When asked, I chose to have it create an alias in my Dock. When the install continued, my dock was restarted and appeared at the bottom of the screen (I usually keep it at the left) - but the icons for iMovie, iPhoto and iMovie HD were replaced with '?' icons. When I looked into it, the applications were removed from my drive (not in the applications folder and spotlight can't find them).

Is there any way to get these installed again? I have uninstalled jFuse, and I have tried looking for their packages on the install CD, but the closest thing I can find is an iTunes package. I have even run an 'upgrade' install from the Tiger CD, but the problem remains. I've spent a lot of time getting this machine going (its my mail server, file server, print server, and primary desktop) and I'm going to be pretty mad at the jFuse people if I can't resolve this.

The other problem is that I can't even really be sure that those are the only things missing, that's just what I could find missing.

Can anyone offer any help? Otherwise I'll be spending my weekend setting my machine up again, and spreading as much bad press about jFuse as possible

If your compleatly nuked the HD during the Tiger instal, then your applications are gone.

If you upgraded or installed over your previous OS (Panther?) then you still have it on your HD. They should still be in your applications folder, if not there check your HD->Previous Instlations->Applications (Though there is likely only a lybrary folder here.)

For refrence
Your iPhotos are here HD->Pictures->iPhoto Lybrary
Your Music is HD->Music->iTunes

If you have an iMac, then there is a Software Reinstall/Restore CD that is sperate from the Base System intall, or you should have the iLife disks.

D.B. Cooper Can help you look at the instalation contents and perhaps install only the components you need. D.B. Cooper is currently being revised, so I don't know if it currently avalible.

Try using the finder, Find (comand-F) and look for iPhoto and iTunes to see if the original apps are around.

If you can't find the instlation disks, then I can't help you much.

I'm assuming you also made a backup before the upgrade to Tiger? If so, pull the applications from your backup. Unfortunately, these apps are not standard in Tiger - you need to purchase iLife.

I don't think you are following me - I'll try to be more clear:

1. New computer, installed Tiger from scratch (clean install, blank drive).
2. Installed the software I use.
3. Set up my mail server (postfix, UW Imap)
-at this point all is well, everything works, and iPhoto and iMovie are still there
4. Installed the demo to jFuse
5. iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD (it seems) are now removed.
6. Uninstalled demo to jFuse
7. Ran the upgrade install from the Tiger CD (in hopes that it would put the software back).
-this changed nothing (didn't loose anything, but didn't put iMovie or iPhoto back)

Don't worry about existing movies and photos - there were none. I just want to know if it is possible to get Tiger to do a 'repair' install or if there is a way I can manually install iMovie and iPhoto again.

I'll check out that software you mentioned. I think I'm hooped.

Moral of the story? jFuse is really lame and I will be warey of anysoftware using 'Install anywhere' as the installer on a Mac from now on. I've emailed jFuse but there has been no response.

It was not an 'upgrade to Tiger', it was a new machine and I installed Tiger on it. The upgrade was just an attempt to get iMovie etc back, but it changed nothing at all (for good or bad). The tiger installs worked fine - this issue is not related to that.

Those applications do indeed seem to be standard with Tiger - I didn't do an upgrade and I had them on my machine from a clean install. Granted, I'm a dev. so I'm using the dev. build, but I am told directly from Apple that the last build is exactly the same as the commercial release.

Hmmm. I did a clean install of Tiger and had no iPhoto. I had to copy it from my backup. Perhaps I missed something in the install

In any case, if you have another Mac, you could copy the application from there.

But I'm really hung up on the fact that iPhoto didn't seem to be included in my Tiger install. I don't recall it being an option to install/not install. I just remember I didn't have it when I was done putting Tiger on. Maybe I'm just losing my mind...

Is your Tiger retail, or included with a computer? Maybe the dev DVD has additional stuff, but I was really under the impression that it was identical to the release... Oh well, when my retail copy gets here with my next ADC package I can check it out.

I suppose I could copy the apps from my powerbook, but I'm still left feeling a bit shakey that there might be other things missing. I was hoping there was a way to have the installer verify everything without formatting. Oh well - there goes my weekend!

Mine was retail - I did a clean install on my iMac after backing everything up. I thought it was odd that it wasn't there, but just figured it was a way to sell iLife.

Maybe I didn't have iMovie, iPhoto, etc. I will accept that as a possibility. Its a new machine, and although I use those programs on my powerbook, I don't have a clear memory of using them on my new powermac. It is possible that jFuse (for some strange reason) made aliases to those programs in my dock when I told it to make an alias for iteself - so MAYBE those '?'s there are just links that were put there by the installer. I don't really think this is the case, as I'm almost certain that I had iMovie and such in my dock, but I don't have any proof of this, and the computer has only been set up for a few days, so I must explore the possibility that I am wrong.

I was just worried that this problem that removed those programs may have removed other parts of the OS - not that the install disk was missing components.

..but hey - make yourself feel better and install the jFuse demo - if you get broken links in your dock to iMove, etc, then you will know that you aren't missing out on anything and that my problem was just me being an idiot and I never had those programs either.


One other thing you can check out for me - use spotlight and search for iMovie - if you get entries related to it in your Library folder, etc, then that backs up the me being and idiot theory as right now that is my only evidence (with the '?' dock icons) that I ever had them installed at all!

I get an iMovie folder in my Library, but I never copied over iMovie from my backup, nor have I run it since upgrading to Tiger. So perhaps it never was there...

Hmmm.... well, I'll be upgrading my powerbook to 10.4 pretty soon, so I can confirm this then. Its not looking good for me though, I may have to sit in the corner of shame.

Its still funny that it made links in my dock to programs I don't have, but I can live with that

I don't know how they got deleted or anything, but to re install them, put the first system disk in, and run install Applications and Classic Support. This will give you the option to install all the bundled software that came with your computer. Or you can choose to install certain applications.

I thought that they were installed because of the broken links in the dock after installing jFuse, but maybe jFuse put those links there and not the other way around.

Right I kind of figured you would know how to replace iLife, and were more focused on figuring out where those broken links came from.

I do have an idea though, did you back up any preferences when you installed Tiger, and then put them into you preferences folder after you installed?

Because if you take your dock prefs from an old system, and the apps aren't on your current system, the dock will do that.

I happened to me.
I installed Tiger, then brought all my prefs in, and when i rebooted, my dock was full on question marks.
