iPod How do i get my ipod to stay in disk mode?

i followed the steps to put my ipod nano (4th gen i think) into disk mode and i was able to get to the "Ok to disconnect" screen, but when i connect it to my mac it flashes the "do not disconnect" screen, itunes opens, then the ipod goes back to "Ok to disconnect" and it acts as if i just have it connected. how do i stop this?
