I made a cool sound file on a website for this purpose, but it doesn't give you a way to download anything (there's no way to get the audio playing on a separate tab and save that, and page source doesn't show it). I don't want to make a huge screen recording video file in order to capture sound… How do I record JUST sound playing on a website? Any audio format playable on the Mac would be great!
Interesting that those are both from the same company.
Edit: Wow, Apple seriously does not want you running this. You have to reboot in a certain way, lower security prefs, and then reboot again just to instal it. They are no longer the computer for the rest of us.

You can also record through analog using a device like this:
Zoom H1n Portable Digital Recorder + Mic Windscreen +3.5 mm TRS to Dual 1/4 TS Cable + 32GB microSDHC Card + AAA Batteries (Black)
www.amazon.com
I have an older version of this and find the results about the same as a camcorder mic. But using the line-input is rather weak on the high end. It's good enough for voice though.

macOS Ventura has got a new way to record audio that doesn't need any third party plugin. You can get OBS, add "macOS Screen Capture" as a source and capture both audio and video, without the need of any audio plugin.

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. Stream to Twitch, YouTube and many other providers or record your own videos with high quality H264 / AAC encoding.

BlackHole is a modern macOS audio loopback driver that allows applications to pass audio to other applications with zero additional latency. - ExistentialAudio/BlackHole

Follow the simple Guide from Blackhole on how to record System Audio. https://github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole#record-system-audio
The Guide suggests GarageBand, but you can also use QuickTimePlayer --> New Audio Recording --> Set Blackhole 2ch as Input Device.
