How do I install Mavericks from Yosemite?

I am intending to install Mavericks on an external volume, but Yosemite won't let me mount/launch the "Install OS X Mavericks" installer.

Just gives me this message.

There *must* be way to install Mavericks on an external volume, but I am stumped.

(BTW, I have fully transitioned to Yosemite, and all my boot volumes are 10.10. And the only Mavericks installer I have is the one I re-downloaded from the App Store.)

Anybody know how to solve this?

Since I posted this question... I downloaded DiscMakerX... and have just booted off the resulting thumb drive...

I wanted to do the exact SAME THING!!
Got the same issue, and the only way was to boot from the drive. After which, I was able to successfully install and run Mavericks on a second partition

And happy to report: success!

I downloaded DiskMakerX (one version previous to current), made an installer USB stick, using a 16GB stick. I then installed 10.9 onto a partition on an external HDD.

I moved the 5GB "Install Mac OS X Mavericks" file to that Mavericks partition, and (while booted into 10.9) installed 10.9 onto a 32GB USB stick.

So: success twice, thanks to DiskMakerX!

I booted from a external SSD, and then cloned via CCC to the internal SSD. You also have to clone the recovery partition, which CCC will prompt you to do when you clone over the Internal.

Now my 2014 Macbook Pro, which shipped with Yosemite, is on Mavericks.
