How do I keep Ilife in Mountain Lion fresh install?

Hi,
Today I bought a 13" macbook pro which did not have Mountain Lion installed, I am running Lion on it currently. Apple gave me a code to download the new OS for free and I want to a fresh install of ML instead of installing it over Lion.

No Ilife discs came with my new mac so my question is if I do a clean install is there a way of getting my ilife back? At the moment my app store lets me download ilife apps for free because it recognises my computer hardware apparently but I don't know if it will let me do this after the fresh install.

So long as you've launched app store and accepted the licence agreement, you'll be able to re-download iLife as the apps are now linked to your account.

There's plenty of info on how to make a standalone installer from the ML download on a USB thumb drive or DVD - Google is your friend .

Otherwise, you can install ML over Lion, then reboot with the option key held down - boot from the recovery partition, use disk utility to wipe your main partition and re-install ML from there - it's long-winded, but it works...

I had the same issues as you. No, even after activation, the App Store does not know you have iLife installed when your Lion machine was shipped.

Instead you would need to write in to Apple, provide your purchase details and serial number so that they will issue 3 codes to redeem, one iPhoto, one GarageBand, one iMovie per code.

is iLife showing in your purchased tab in the Mac App Store? if yes than your good, a clean install will not erase the apps listed in there

Not the case for me. I opened my MAS and clicked "Accept" in the iLife apps and now they show up as purchased apps available for download/install when I look in my purchases tab on another Mac that does not have the iLife suite installed. No call to Apple needed.

iLife shows up in my App Store as well but i've never bought it or called Apple.

The app store knows you have it because it searches your apps for updates, like how I have OS X server in my downloads folder so the App Store shows that server is installed on my computer even though it is not on this one.

My experience was wholly different when I bought my 2012 MBA. But they're pretty quick to issue me the redemption codes for ilife though. Perhaps I didnt even fire up any of the trio apps that's why Apple has no record of my activation.
