Greetings all!!

I have followed the Dev Teams instructions, and successfully upgraded my 3G to 3.1. I really do not use "jailbreak" apps, but do rely on the UltraSn0w unlock to continue to use the phone on T-Mobile (USA). The upgrade process worked well, and the phone works perfectly on T-Mo.

So, why am I thinking about a downgrade?

In talking with a friend, he reminded me that when we go up to the Port Angeles area of Washington State for work, there are places where the phones switch over to Rogers in Canada vs T-Mobile USA. He asks: if the carrier logo is missing how will we know? (We obviously want to avoid paying "roaming" fees while on Rogers.)

Can we just limit the Network to T-Mobile by selecting that rather than using the Automatic option?

Or, shall I just downgrade to 3.0 where this is not an issue?

If I need to downgrade, can I simply do a restore from iTunes with the Pwned 3.0 IPSW, then run UltraSn0w? Is it that simple? (If so, I'll probably do that to also regain tethering and so on as well which was working fine on 3.0 prior to the upgrade to 3.1. It's not a critical issue for me ... but is "nice" to have!!)

Thanks in advance.

(By the way, I have access to both Windows & a Mac so can use either to perform the restore. I primarily use the Windows machine for day-to-day management of the phone, but use the Mac to run the Pwnage tool.)

Cheers!!

You don't need to do anything other than toggle the "Data Roaming" to off. You can also then dispute any charges that may come from Rogers via T-Mo, but in all reality, if you can pick up a Rogers Signal from Port Angeles, I would contact the FCC or CRTC, as Rogers would have to have a tower that is over powered to reach that distance.

Also, why is the carrier information missing? That should still be there, then change when you change connected networks, letting you know something happened.

Does the "Data Roaming on/off" feature work as expected on a hacked/unlocked iPhone?

The carrier name disappears when the upgrade to 3.1 happens (apparently a well known "issue") both on the home screen and on the About screen. And yes, we do get changed to Rogers at times.

I understand the data roaming can be turned off for the data part, but that does not seem to prevent calls and TXT messages.

Again, this was not an issue in 3.0!! Only on the pwned and unlocked 3.1 did this emerge.

Thanks.

Done!!

Actually, I just decided to go ahead and do the downgrade and see what happens. I had a copy of the original 3.0 IPSW so I re-ran the Pwnage Tool 3.0 again, then connected the phone to iTunes (9). Did a SHIFT-RESTORE (Windows) and selected the revised IPSW (3.0). Just went through the process without a hitch. Came back to the Home Screen, but no bars on the SIM card (T-Mobile). Turned on Wi-Fi and did the Ultrasn0w process ... rebooted and I'm back in business - on T-Mobile and everything else works (tethering, MMS, etc).

Only "issue" I found was restoring the backup ... iTunes refused because it said the backup was created by a later version. Fair enough. No problem ... just setup as new and reloaded everything. Took a bit longer, but otherwise unremarkable.

Thanks anyway for the info!!

I'll keep monitoring and when there's a 3.1 that solves these minor issues, I'll upgrade then.

Cheers!!
