Stupid question of the day.

When there are multiple monitors, and I want to assign an application to a specific monitor and space, it gives me options like - "Desktop on Display 1", "Desktop on Display 2","Desktop on Display 3" .

How do I know which display is "Display 1" ? If I look in System Preferences->Displays, it shows the display mode, resolution, and other properties. In the arrangement Window, I can position them and drag the menu part to one of them. But!!! It doesn't show the display number.

So where can I see the display number for each display?

I could be wrong (others will correct me), but...

... I think the display that contains the menu bar will be "display 1". Other one will be display 2.

Let's say I have 3 displays, and the menu bar is on the middle display. If we assume Display 1 is the middle one, which one is Display 2? Which one is Display 3?

I don't see those options. Where do you find them?

In mission control, select “displays have separate spaces”

The right click on an app in the dock. Navigate to options->”assign to” to select a display.

Sometimes it will say “Space X on Display Y” I think that appears if the application is already assigned to a Display.

A sea of green
In olden times, one would press the Option modifier key while the screen-arrangement panel was visible, and numbers would appear on the screen icons.

At least I think it was the Option key. It might have been Shift or Cmd.

To put a timeline on this, the last time I did this was on a Mac IIx.

I'm running Catalina and I don't see that. I also remember that the option key used to display numbers. Maybe they moved away from numbered displays in Catalina. If you're on Mojave, try the option key (and maybe click "Detect Displays").

This is what it looks like to assign an application to a Desktop.
