If I don't lock my Mac, then it doesn't go to sleep until it's been idle for 10 mins. This is great for when I want to process something and step away for a bathroom/coffee break.

However, I haven't found a way to secure my laptop and also leave it running during that time. Pressing ⌘^Q will lock it, but it seems there's some kind of secondary timer that sends a locked laptop to sleep after 30s or so. How do I get it to stay awake on the lock screen for the full 10 mins?

My understanding is you want to lock the screen but keep it from going to sleep while on battery. There is a program called "Amphetamine" that presents an icon on the menu bar. The program keeps your Mac from going to sleep for a certain amount of time you set in the program. Maybe that program will help you keep the Mac awake for the amount of time you're looking for.
