Yosemite its driving me mad from the first second i have installed it. I use to press the green button to maximize a window, now it seems to make it full screen :mad::mad:

Whats going on?!

First of all, breath in and out. Relax.

Now you've done that you can Zoom a window by pressing and holding option. The full-screen symbol of the green stoplight button will change to a plus, then click it. Alternatively, double-click any empty space of the app's toolbar.

The green button does go full screen. To obtain the pre-Yosemite behavior hold option while you click the green button.

In Windows, the “maximize” button has always made the active window as large as possible to fill the screen. It’s not “full screen” in the strictest sense, but it’s a close equivalent. In helping many users transition from Windows to OS X over the years, we’ve found that it’s also one of the areas that new Mac users find most confusing, as they expect the zoom button to function similarly to the maximize button.

From reddit.com

I have a feeling I'm not going to like this. I almost never use full screen. I prefer to simply maximize my windows so I can still see the menu bar. I already use spaces, so I have no need to have extra spaces for full screen apps. I'm hoping there will be a (hidden?) option to turn this off.

I want a maximize button, how hard is that

Unfortunately, OS X doesn’t do that natively. The green button either enables Fullscreen Mode or zooms the window (option key + green button / double-click on toolbar).

However, there are some third-party apps in the App Store that can make it easier for you to maximise windows. My personal favourite is Window Magnet. With that app you just have to drag the window to the top. It hasn’t been updated for Yosemite yet, but it still works anyway (an update is in the works as well).

I use BetterSnapTool for this exact functionality. It also mimics Windows snap to left and right very well, which is handy.
