didn't know that, thank you!First of all, breath in and out. Relax.
Now you've done that you can Zoom a window by pressing and holding option. The full-screen symbol of the green stoplight button will change to a plus, then click it. Alternatively, double-click any empty space of the app's toolbar.
Dashboard is disabled by default. You can enable it again in System Preferences > Mission Control.Ahhh, ok thanks, strange thing to do, but it works.
Next, where has my dashboard gone?

Pressing option will result in Zoom with every app I tried so far. What app won't Zoom according to you?clicking option does NOT always maximize the screen...only selective apps

Unfortunately, OS X doesnt do that natively. The green button either enables Fullscreen Mode or zooms the window (option key + green button / double-click on toolbar).
However, there are some third-party apps in the App Store that can make it easier for you to maximise windows. My personal favourite is Window Magnet. With that app you just have to drag the window to the top. It hasnt been updated for Yosemite yet, but it still works anyway (an update is in the works as well).

I use BetterSnapTool for this exact functionality. It also mimics Windows snap to left and right very well, which is handy.
