How do I middle click to close a browser tab using the MBP's trackpad?

Command + clicking on a link will open it in a new tab the way middle clicking would, but Command + clicking on an open tab doesn't close it in either Chrome or Safari.

Why not just click on the x in the tab header?

Why not just click on the x in the tab header?
