I'm thinking of upgrading my Mid 2011 iMac to a new iMac with 3 TB of storage. My current iMac has 1TB and I have 292 GB left on the iMac. On my external HD, I have 2.31 TB available out of 3 TB. I been able to find a bunch of articles about offloading photos to external HD where the internal HD is not enough space but if I upgrade to the new iMac with 3 TB, I'll have plenty of space and want to move it all back to the iMac. Can someone walk me through how to do this? I can't seem to find anything.

It's the same as moving any files. Connect your EHD and double click on it in Finder. Drag whatever files you want back to the iMac folder.

Personally when I move files I open a Finder window for the source folder and another for the destination folder and then just drag and drop.

There's no special technique required.

OP:

Tell us HOW the files are stored and accessed, and tell us WHICH photo editing apps you're using.
Are you using iPhoto, Photos, Lightroom, something else?

By the way, is the external drive the ONLY location for your photos?
Are you backed up?
If not, YOU BETTER START BACKING UP RIGHT NOW.
If that drive FAILS, ALL your photos will be GONE.
