How do I pull off this presentation?

I am going to be doing a presentation in about a month on laboratory automation.

I want to be able to show the process steps (a normal process flow chart) and have it 'zoom into' the process step which shows animated (Vector style) arrows and 'people' doing the process. Then zoom back out to the process flow and zoom into the next step.

So, something much, much more dynamic/animated than a normal powerpoint.

How can this be done?

I assume I'll have to render something or other, but I wouldn't even know where to start. It may be too ambitious for what is coming up, but ... for next time? What do I need to learn?

personally, i would do it in Keynote and use After Effects animations for the parts that are complex + move. you can then export each AE animation and drop it into the keynote presentation as a quicktime movie so it all works smoothly together. If it does not need to be interactive (e.g. you just want it to play and not advance each "slide" manually) then i would do it all in AE.

that may not be the best way or even the "right" way but thats how i would (and have) done it.

Being a Motion Designer Id like to suggest AE but if your working with major vectors and require interactivity then this is best done in Flash. Unless of course your just playing back digital video then AE it is

I just finished a presentation like this at work. Follow what shecky recommends, it is the way that worked for me.

First, I storyboard the animations, contact an animator who puts the movies together with after effects and then I put the individual movies on slides in PowerPoint of Keynote when and where they need to be in the presentation.

It was a big success. Good luck!

just need to remember that keynote only likes one movie per slide (well for me it does, anyone else?)

slide animation can do some but depends how involved you want your animations

This is along the lines of what I want to do. I have a family wedding coming up and the program involves going through slides during a "presentation-ish speech" and also a couple movies. I'd like to have the entire presentation integrated into one file that's already open on the projector when everyone walks in (it's distracting when you minimize a presentation to open a movie player to do the video, etc).

I'm not sure what the vector things are all about that are being discussed in this thread, but I basically just a lot of slides with some movies in between (that automatically start playing when we get to the slide). After each "piece," we'll be coming back to the main "___ & ____ Wedding slide" that stays up during any part of the program that does not have any multimedia needs

I know that StoryBoard Quick exports the frame images to Flash, like snickelfritz mentioned.

Thanks. I'm really not Flash Savvy though, I think I'd like to try and use keynote

I personally have never heard of it, I am going to give it a whirl, I think. I could see it having some use for some work projects...
