There are a couple of desktop backgrounds that I just find ugly and would like to delete (specifically, the ones called “Reflection,” if you're interested). There's no option to “move to trash.” I used to delete them with no problem but no longer can with the changes introduced in Catalina.

The System folder is now stored on a separate read only partition of your hard drive - you can browse but you can’t touch.

There is a way, however, to disable SIP and enable write access to the Data partition and then do as you say, but then after that you’d need to be sure to re-enable SIP.

apple, in it's infinite wisdom, believes we all need 2GB of apple-favored images permanently embedded in the OS (even disabling SIP won't give you 'delete' access to the images, moved now to the System>Library).

so it goes.

EDIT: oops, stiligFox might be right (about enabling write access)...

You have to disable SIP and mount the system volume as writable (mount -uw /). But you can delete them from Terminal in Recovery without all that.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm trying to decide if I want to take the steps or leave well enough alone and just live with the desktop pics I don't like.

2GB is a lot, for files you don't want, or use. but... hardly seems worth it, and those files will just get replaced with the next update.

why apple thinks that desktop pictures should not be removable is beyond me, but this is apple we're talking about.
