I'm pissed.

Two days ago I backed up my MBP with Super Duper and then did a clean install of Snow Leopard.

Installed VMware Fusion.

Installed my Mac applications including Unison.

All of the RAR files are associated with XP on Parallels!

The only thing I can think of is that I had Parallels installed on my computer before and somehow when I had my Super Duper drive attached to my new install it picked up something from that?

How do I get rid of all this stuff? How do I set certain things like .exe fies to unknown (or at the very least Fusion)?

Right-click on any such file, Get Info, change the "Open with" selection, then click "Change All"

14 years later... was looking to do the same thing, found a solution and did a small writeup.

For posterity (and because this thread shows up when googling):

To remove parallels file associations everywhere
1. Disable file associations on mac and windows (instructions)

- Open the windows VM and shut it down
- Click "Actions" in the menu bar, then "Configure" to open the VM settings
- Click "Options" > "Applications"
- Uncheck (disable) "Share Windows applications with Mac" and "Share Mac applications with Windows"
- Exit settings
- Optionally delete the folder "Applications (Parallels)" which contained shortcuts by... opening finder, going to your home folder (click your name under favorites), and deleting the folder

2. Rebuild the mac file association database

- Open a terminal
- Copy and paste this command in (without quotes)
"/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user"
- Hit enter and let it run
- Restart finder by pasting this command in (without quotes)
"killall Finder"
- Hit enter
